The occurrence of the event maintains the need for skills in a host of traditional crafts. On the main island, where lush green vegetation abounds, the traditional attire for women is the grass skirt. Many examples are seen of dull green, but the costume worn by dancers is brightly coloured. Elaborate Leis, or Nunu in the local language, are worn around the neck, carefully woven palm frond or pandanus with sculpted flowers is worn as headdresses. The attention to detail is overwhelming, a whole army of helpers are working in the wings to dress and prepare the dancers for each performance.
