Charlottetown to Straight of Canso

June 20th (cont.)
The restaurant in Charlottetown that we picked for the birthday dinner was SIMS Corner Steakhouse.
Pricey but excellent. It is still raining. It’s not getting any dryer so we feel we can sit wet at the dock or just head out in the morning because it is calling for light winds.

Up and at it early. It’s 6:30 the sky is clear and the wind is from the west blowing 10 -15 knots. We are off to Pictou. A beautiful run so a change of plans, we will head straight for Ballantynes Cove and put some miles behind us while the weather is good. The docks at Ballantynes are almost empty except for the fishing boats.
It is raining again however the fish and chip canteen is up and operating so it’s fish chowder and a double fish dinner for supper, delicious. We are not dining alone; a fox crosses the road with a rabbit almost as big as him in his mouth and drags it into the long grass.
Moira is so cold and wet; we don’t have shore power so no heat. At this point she claims that she will just stick her head in the new gas oven* wait a minute a source of heat and we start the oven to heat the cabin. Out of desperation comes hope.

The weather is holding so we are up and at it again early, this time off for the Canso straight and Port Hawkesbury. We need tide and current tables for the Atlantic Coast and paper charts for Nova Scotia. As much as we like to rely on the electronic charts we feel a need to be able to see the big picture on a large-scale paper chart.
We no sooner get tied up and Walter (a board member of the club) has made a call to the local dive shop owner, even thou it is Sunday she will open the store for us and within ½ hour we have everything we need. We do the laundry and prep for an early departure. Tomorrow we are off to the port of Canso and the eastern shore.
