Sailing Circumnavigators Cruising the Reefs and Islands

Sailing north to the islands

The day after Christmas (Boxing Day), we cut ties on the dock in St George's and started the 5-6 hour sail north to Carriacou. We initially motor sailed in medium light wind, hugging the coast of Grenada to be able to duck under the islands north, including Ronde, with our objective being to turn more north and take advantage of wind veering to the east. This initially worked great, we turned off the motor, hoisted full canvas including the stay sail and were going 7-8 knots on the rhumb line to the west of Carriacou. Skipper and crew were delighted, but after only a little over an hour, the wind backed back to the northeast and we hit an adverse current pushing us the west. We continued to sail, but after sailing off course for another 45 minutes, and having a bit of time crunch to make our anchorage in daylight, we reluctantly turned the motor back on and motor sailed the last hour into Sandy Island. We enjoyed a great meal at the Paradise Beach restaurant, which after taking the full brunt of hurricane Beryl only six months ago is miraculously rebuilt and up and running well.

Pictured here are plaques painted by our friends from the World ARC who visited here with us at Paradise Restaurant last March.
