Sailing Circumnavigators Cruising the Reefs and Islands

Sailing a Close Reach to Bequia

After a great open water swim all the way around Baradal Island in Tobago Cays, we cut our mooring and started sailing for Bequia, to join friends and celebrate the New Year.

The skipper expected forecast NE winds at 40-50° true compass heading and winds at 12-18 knots. Therefore we were not looking forward to be able to sail much as we would have had to sail too close to the wind direction. We were in for a pleasant surprise as we got the wind pressure we expected but it veered closer to the east; we shut our motor off almost immediately, sailing all the way into the anchorage in Bequia, making it in 4 hours. The seas were a bit lumpy and waves somewhat forward of our beam at 1-3 feet, so we did take green water over the bow on occasion, but all in all it was a very decent sail.
The morning swim was also quite a success, as we saw many fish, turtles and a big eagle ray amongst the coral gardens around Baradal Island.

After reaching Bequia, we spent a great day hiking Mt Peggy (named for Princess Margaret), seeing our friends on SV "Happy" and then the street party in town in Bequia.

New Years Day, we went diving with "Dive Bequia" and experienced the phenomenal coral gardens on the Bequia cliffs on the west side of the island, seeing also many fish, moray eels and lobster.

Bequia was a highlight of Sofia and Silvana's Caribbean trip!
