Heading North
05 July 2013 | Manistee, MI
Fantastic
Okay, so far we've checked into Waukegan, Sheboygan and now Manistee, MI just so Kody our Shnoodle could go poddy on shore; let's see, that's about $180.00 so my dog could poo.
Today's sail was just about idealistic. The wind was from the south to south west, 12 to 15 knots; our course was 60 degrees mag. I set up our self steering Hydrovane we affectionately have named Vivaldi and he steered us all the way across the lake. Some 70 miles, nice job man, good ole Vivaldi. Alice, Kody and I were free to do as we pleased, Lucky Bird and Vivaldi handled all the work. So nice, free self steering, free wind and we are now on the Michigan side of the lake.
Tomorrow is a bit of a crap-shoot. If the winds build we might do an over-nighter, if not, then we'll have to find another harbor for Kody. My sense is to keep pushing north and east taking advantage of the southerly flow before the winds shift to the north and east. Sailors have to pay attention to the weather especially the wind velocity and direction. To folks on the land, who cares?
So tonight I'm pleased to be across the lake but a little ambivalent about out next stop-over. This dog creates the ambivalence, and yet having Kody on board is a joy especially when she plops down with her head on my leg and looks up with those big brown eyes. I'm a softy for that kind of stuff.
