Alice I had the day free and we needed some exercise so we decided to walk over the bridge through the forest to visit Hacienda Tijax, about a 3 mile walk.
We used Google translate to ask for directions as we worked our way west through Fontera's very busy main road. We persevered, working our way into the forest arriving after 1 1/2 hours at the guarded Hacienda Tijax gate. More smart phone translation and the guard let us enter.
Hotel Hacienda Tijax Jungle Lodge & Marina is part of the Hacienda Tijax Project, which is a large farm nestled in a magical and natural surrounding at Rio Dulce dedicated to conservation, ecotourism, light adventure tourism and sustainable farming. They have a rubber plantation and a nature reserve with trails ideal for hiking, learning about trees, medicinal plants and bird watching.
We found the restaurant, ordered lunch, had a few beers and then decided to continue our hiking journey up to the Tower of the Shaman.
On the way back we took the route via the swing bridges through the forest canopy.
A great afternoon of exerciser and exploration topped of with a quick lancha ride back across the Rio to RAM marina for showers, cocktails and recovery.
