Stewart Island’s permanent population is 400.
There are only 28kms of road on the island.
Rainfall here is 63-71 inches a year!
Oban on Half-moon Bay is the only settlement.
The electricity supply comes from diesel generators.
The corner store is well stocked and reasonably priced.
Fishing and tourism keep the economy robust.
The island is densely forested, 80% of it protected.
The Maori name, Rakiura, means "glowing skies".
The sunsets and southern lights are what it’s famous for...
Kiwi bird sightings too.
Last night we went to the hotel for “pub quiz” night.
The place was packed.
We were assigned to the "let me google that" team.
"No cell phones" was the only rule.
We had a blast!!
Loved our team mates...
loved the challenge of the questions...
learned a lot...
and won the whole thing...
Our prize: a $50 bar tab!!
And that's just day one!
YAY!!
