Sunshine and “the yellow city”.

The sunshine followed us today as we left Merida headed to Tulum.
Our driver, Juan Carlos, kindly agreed to stop at Izamal, "the yellow city", along the way and we spent two wonderful hours visiting the Covento de San Antonio and it's museum.
We learned that the convent and many of the buildings in the city were painted yellow in preparation for Pope John Paul's visit in 1993 since it is the same shade of yellow used in the Vatican.
I loved it, especially as the blue sky and white sporadic clouds seemed to illuminate the yellow walls all about, filling the square with joy!!
The Mayan language is spoken here equally as much as Spanish is, and the city is a pilgrimage destination for many Roman Catholics to this day.
Juan Carlos led us to a traditional Mayan restaurant, Kinich, a little off the beaten track, where Kim enjoyed cochinita pibil again while he and I oohed and aaahed over the white tailed venison cooked with almonds and traditional Mayan spices!
We were so glad we'd veered off the main road to experience this gem.
From there to Tulum we munched on fresh mango, mouthfuls of sunshine to complete the experience!
