Hatchet Bay
08 March 2007
Before we left Governor's Harbour we attempted to anchor in the harbor to go ashore and find water and fresh produce. We tried multiple times to get our anchor to set on the hard bottom. After 30min we decided that these conditions were unsafe. At the last minute we decided to head for the protected harbor of Hatchet Bay 15 nm north. The forecast again was completely off. They predicted light and variable winds all day with patchy squalls. Our conditions consisted of a steady 25-knot wind from the NE.
When we arrived at Hatchet Bay through the small opening carved through a high rock wall, we heard from our friends on Winsome that the mooring balls were suitable. After numerous attempts and even losing our boat hook to the sea we secured ourselves to the mooring ball. We heading into what we thought was a town. According to our guide hatchet Bay was destroyed by a hurricane and has never been the same since. The conditions of the area are very depressing. We decided that one night would be plenty.
