The fish that didn't get away.....

Since leaving Bora Bora 7 days ago we haven't seen any other vessels nor had we caught a fish.....that is until 1400hrs today. Memories of the last debacle were all too fresh in our minds, when, (and this was three weeks ago) we hooked a magnificent Mahi Mahi, played it, landed it only to have it slither back into the water to freedom after it spat out the hook on the deck leaving us salivating and speechless. So when the reel ran today we were determined not to repeat that episode. This time the fish was a Wahoo and we were both ready, after slowing down the boat, with reel taught and gaff at the ready we were determined to get this one safely on the deck. All went well, apart from a last second panic when the fish didn't fit sideways through the gap of the gate in the lifelines. An hour later, having successfully gutted, filleted, bagged and freezered, cleaned up and showered, the reel went off again.... Once again it was a Wahoo, bigger then the first. Same old fear, don't lose the fish at the last minute....reel taught (Paula), Stephen with the gaff and right there alongside the boat the hook came out but a simultaneous lunge by Stephen and his trusty gaff got the fish just in front of the tail and he managed to flick the fish on board upside down. Yahoo Wahoo! Poisson Cru for entree & fresh fish for dinner!
