Join us for a trip from New York to Tasmania, and back, we hope. Departing Saturday.

Back Across Stormy Storm Bay to Hobart

Dawn at Ladies Bay in Port Arthur was placid and calm, with just a hint of a northerly breeze. We hauled the anchor and headed down the harbor, soon sailing in a light northwest breeze.

But, as forecast, the west and southwest winds hit us hard at the mouth if the bay, and we were soon loafing along, triple reefed, in driving rain as we tried to make enough southing to clear the hard rocks of Cape Raoul to the west.

Such was our return trip, triple reefed and on the wind in the southern ocean seas all the way across storm bay. But we stayed dry, mostly, and warm enough.

We ran back up the Derwent River in the afternoon under jib alone, and we were even able to back into our slip ok, with some line handling help from Rob on board the sports fisherman Believe across the dock.
