The Long way Round Jersey
29 September 2015 | Chesapeake City
We have been very busy it’s the only excuse I have for the lack of updates.
We saw a two day weather window to get out of Sandy Hook and decided to make a run for it. A 190 mile run that is all the way from there passing the entire New Jersey Coast and up the Delaware to Chesapeake City. It was that or wait the weather out for the next week somewhere close to Sandy Hook which wasn’t so comfortable.
We got underway around 7am on the 28th and immediately realized that the anchor windlass had sheared something off inside. This meant bringing 120’ of chain and a 100 lb anchor in by hand. I was able to use the Jib winches to bring the anchor home.
It was quite rolly once we got outside the Hook and we motor sailed with a large floatilla all with the same intentions. Two other boats from Halifax were in the fleet the two Trawlers Arcturus and Aquataura. They quickly moved to the front of the pack while we took up the middle with our trawler engine.
We realized how the Barnegat inlet would not be passable even if we wanted to go in due to the large East swell rolling through as we watched the entire entrance breaking!
We were able to shut the engine off at supper time and watch the full moon start to rise as Atlantic city rolled passed. Heather and Sam took the first shift and they had a blast (I know as I was trying to get to sleep in the aft cabin and had left the hatch open. Arleigh and I got up around midnight and took over as we were passing Cape May. The Delaware is notorious for nasty seas and strong currents but the wind had pooped out by then and we were just entering the Delaware as the tide started to flood so we were able to gain a few knots arriving at the C&D Canal by noon.
We got into Chesapeake City where if you can dredge your way to it there is a free city dock. (Didn’t have to use the anchor) and tore the windlass apart. Part were ordered and will be in Annapolis early next week.
Brandy, Tom, Hazel and Olive (Friends we met on Block Island) Met up with us here and we had a great evening with their visit and went to dinner at the Chesapeake Inn. We have planned to meet up in the Bahamas again (Brandy confirmed it had nothing to do with the wine).
Great spot to stop for the night with good company. The pouring rain didn’t really dampen the fun at all.
The pic is of Heather and Tilley having a well deserved rest on watch.
