Made it back to Moss Landing

23 August 2014
We had a great sail back to Moss Landing from Capitola. We had a steady breeze and a sunny day. Ready to start planning the next trip - and really hope Grandpa Tait can make it next time!

Summer Sail Aug 2014

20 August 2014 | Capitola
Spent another great day in Capitola. Sam and Tait went fishing and caught a few small fish then we played in the water at the beach for several hours boogie boarding and tait went surfing.
It was cloudy most of the day until about 4pm when the sun came out and it was a beautiful afternoon!
Great dinner at Geisha Sushi and then hot cocoa on the boat.

We stayed the night anchored off the beach boardwalk in Santa Cruz. I'll have to say it was rockier and louder than I remember before (lots of sea lions barking all night).
We had a great day with buschia at the boardwalk and playing soccer on the beach. (See pics in gallery).

This morning while I went for a run, the kids and Tait went out to breakfast. Then we spent several hours at the beach in Capitola on the boogie boards. It was a lot of fun. Then we packed up and sailed (motored) to Santa Cruz and are anchored off of the beach at the boardwalk. Tait BBQ'd hamburgers while we were under way and the kids played cards.
After getting an ice cream at the boardwalk, we are so ready for bed.

We left at 2pm on Aug 15th out of Moss Landing Harbor. Packed up with food and water we were ready for the afternoon trip to capitola. Even before we made it out of the harbor marker we were already seeing spouting whales. It was amazing because everywhere we looked there were a group of whales. We headed towards 2-3 spouting and swimming. (See picture). It was awesome.
The rest of the afternoon we saw various other whales (that I think were humpback whales). We also saw jelly fish and of course sea lions.
Before we left, we walked to the beach and saw tons of little purple and clear creatures washed up on the shore. We had never seen this before on the beach. After some web searches, we found out they were called velellas. They are usually not found in this area, but since the water temperature is warmer than usual, I guess they have come this way.

We are rolling a bit in the swell when we arrived to Capitola, but it is fun to be at a place we have never anchored before. We went on shore and the kids played a little at the beach before heading back. Everyone is pretty tired after today. The kids did great and did not get sick even with watching a movie below deck! Well, this time I decided to pre-treat them with 1/4 tab of dramamine to see if that would help. Don't know if that's what did it, but just glad it turned out the way it did.
Today we will go to the beach and cruise around town.

Channel Islands Summary

31 March 2013 | Piedras Blancas
Happy Easter!

So we have had no coverage to post during our time at the Channel Islands- and now also realize we can't get our pics from the camera to our iPad. We are such the novice bloggers!
Anyway, to summarize our adventure so far - we left Santa Barbara Monday morning and stayed out at Santa Cruz Island until Friday. The kids did great and we had a good time. The weather was awesome. We anchored at Prisoner's Harbor, Smuggler's Cove and Twin Harbors. We were able to explore land each day, discovering trails and wildlife on the island. I will post some pics when we get back (I know it's not the same as posting as it happens!)-

Right now Tait, his dad and I are just off the coast of Big Sur, 28hrs into the trip back to moss landing, with about 14hrs to go. Point Conception was uncharacteristically calm and actually sunny and warm. We have had some winds from the south (which is also not typical), so we were able to sail for awhile instead of just motoring.

(I did have one picture on my iPad- coloring Easter eggs on the boat with the kids!)
