Mangonui Harbour Trip 5-7 Jun 2013
22 June 2013
Sean B, Dave W and I did a two night trip to Manganui Harbour and back to Westhaven to try Magique out at night. Magique went well and we found a few things to fix/improve on.
I would like to say I enjoyed the trip but mostly I did not. That is not because of the crew who were excellent and so was Magique. I did not like the night sailing with short seas and sharp motion and hull pounding, tiring and sleep poor. We had a fast sail North, 22hrs to do 200nm. 30-35kts Southerly, so double reefed and shortened jib. Lovely fish 'n chips at Mangonui. Then 25 hours to do 200nm back into a 15-5kt headwind. Used an engine to point at about 50 degrees true. Remote SmartController failed when flybridge autopilot used (nasty round up in 35kts and a gybe). Can I make the Sounds/Fiords? Have to suck it up and I am still working on the planning.
Oh yes, Magique likes a ride down a wave, see photo for max speed!!
And so it begins

Well, let's see how well I keep up my blog. I have a few adventures planned for Magique over the next year. I would like to take Magique to the Marlborough Sounds in Jan 2014 and Fiordland and maybe Stewart Island in Feb 2014.
