From Baie de Gaspé to the Canso Canal

We spent a couple of wonderful days in the Baie de Gaspé where we took time to explore the Forillon National Park, one of the many stunning parks Canada has to offer. Among other trails, we hiked the Mount Alban trail (don't be fooled by the name, we're only talking about 900 ft elevation gain) which started right off of our anchorage. The first couple of miles made for fairly steep going, but once we reached the observation tower we were swept up by the exceptional beauty of the sea and cliffs below.

Looking at the calendar and the wind forecast, we made the tough decision to skip Cape Breton (great hiking!) and Lake Bras d’Or (sailor’s playground). Unfortunately there is just not enough time left for all the beautiful places along the way.

Considering the wind forecast it seemed to be best to do two overnight trips from Baie de Gaspé via the Magdalen Islands to the Canso Canal which were about 150 miles each. The Strait of Canso separates Cape Breton Island from the mainland of Nova Scotia, providing a shortcut to the eastern coast and the first glimpse of the wide open Atlantic Ocean.
And there we were immediately greeted by the famous Nova Scotia fog- thick, cold and wet!

Von der Baie de Gaspé zum Canso Kanal

Wir verbrachten ein paar wunderbare Tage in der Baie de Gaspé, wo wir uns Zeit nahmen, den Forillon-Nationalpark zu erkunden, einen der vielen atemberaubenden Parks, die Kanada zu bieten hat.

Wir wanderten unter anderem auf dem Mount Alban Trail, der fast unmittelbar an unserem Ankerplatz begann. Lasst euch von dem Namen nicht täuschen, wir reden hier von nur ca. 275 Metern Höhenunterschied. Die ersten paar Kilometer waren trotzdem ziemlich steil, aber als wir den Aussichtsturm erreichten, waren wir von der außergewöhnlichen Schönheit des Meeres und der Klippen unter uns überwältigt.

Mit Blick auf den Kalender und der Windvorhersage trafen wir schweren Herzens die Entscheidung, Cape Breton (großartiges Wandergebiet!) und den Lake Bras d'Or (Spielplatz für Segler) von unserer Reisezielliste zu streichen. Leider bleibt nicht genug Zeit für all die schönen Orte entlang der Strecke.
Wir entschieden uns stattdessen für zwei Übernachtfahrten von der Baie de Gaspé über die Magdaleneninseln zum Canso-Kanal, die jeweils etwa 230 Kilometer lang waren. Die Straße von Canso trennt Cape Breton Island vom Festland von Nova Scotia und bietet somit eine Abkürzung zur Ostküste und dem weiten, offenen Atlantik. Und da wurden gleich von dem berühmten Nova Scotia Nebel empfangen - dicht, kalt und nass!
