We hope we'll never have to see it again

When we bought MAKAAN, she came with a 6 person Switlik life raft that had not been recertified since 2013. As there was no dealer in the Chicagoland area who could service the raft, we decided to get it done during our trip down the East Coast.

It so happened that friends of ours, Courtney and Jason, arranged a get-together with other friends of theirs who live near Portland, ME.
We had a fabulous time with Brad and Stephanie who graciously invited us into their house, showed us the beautiful area they call their home, and even entrusted us with their car so we could explore the surroundings when they had prior engagements. The icing on the cake was that there was a marine store in downtown Portland where they could service our life raft, about 40 minutes away from Brad and Steph's home.

When we got there, John, the technician, offered to inflate the raft while we were still there. How cool is that!!! We weren't even sure if it would inflate or if they would still service it at all, considering the life raft was already 20 years old.
Needless to say, it was fantastic to see the inflated raft, all the parts that were included and to get a demonstration on how they would have to be used in an emergency. And we were thoroughly impressed what great condition the raft was still in.

We can only hope that we'll never have to see the life raft inflated ever again!


Hoffentlich müssen wir es nie wieder sehen

Als wir MAKAAN kauften, war eine Rettungsinsel dabei, die seit 2013 nicht mehr gewartet worden war. Da es um Chicago herum keinen Händler gab, der sie warten konnte, beschlossen wir, dies während unserer Reise entlang der Ostküste zu erledigen.

Zufälligerweise hatten unsere Freunde Courtney und Jason ein Treffen mit anderen ihrer Freunde organisiert, die in der Nähe von Portland, ME, leben. Wir hatten eine wunderbare Zeit mit Brad und Stephanie, die uns freundlicherweise in ihr Haus einluden, uns die wunderschöne Gegend zeigten, die sie ihr Zuhause nennen, und uns sogar ihr Auto anvertrauten, damit wir die Umgebung erkunden konnten, wenn sie andere Verpflichtungen hatten. Das Tüpfelchen auf dem i war, dass es in der Innenstadt von Portland, etwa 40 Minuten vom Haus von Brad und Steph entfernt, ein Marinegeschäft gab, in dem man unsere Rettungsinsel warten konnte.

Als wir dort ankamen, hat uns John, der Techniker, angeboten, das Floß gleich in unserer Gegenwart noch aufzublasen. Wie cool ist das denn!!! Wir waren uns nicht einmal sicher, ob es sich noch aufblasen lassen würde oder ob es überhaupt noch gewartet werden könnte, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Rettungsinsel schon 20 Jahre alt war. Es war natürlich fantastisch, das aufgeblasene Rettungsboot und alle dazugehörigen Teile zu sehen und eine Demonstration zu bekommen, wie man sie bedienen müsste. Und wir waren sehr beeindruckt, in welch gutem Zustand sich das Raft nach 20 Jahren noch befand.

Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass dies das erste und letzte Mal war, dass wir unsere Rettungsinsel in aufgeblasenem Zustand gesehen haben.
