George Town, Grand Exuma

So we spent the last 12 days in George Town, the capital of the Exumas, located on Great Exuma Island.
Probably everybody cruising The Bahamas will at some point end up in George Town. During one of their weekly boat counts, we learned that 260 boats were anchored between Grand Exuma Island and Stocking Island, a number that can increase to 400 during peak season. As the boats were spread out over about 2 miles, it never felt crowded though.

The area has a cruiser’s net every day at 8 am on VHF channel 72. It’s a time for cruisers to make announcements, ask for help, organize events, and for local businesses to advertise.
Some of the cruisers who spend a large part of the season in George Town offer a whole slew of activities one can partake in: yoga, water aerobics, beach volleyball, dominos, poker etc. You learn about the place and time of the activity in the morning announcements, hop into your dinghy and join in. What a great way to meet new people!
One really cool event while we were there was a “rooftop concert” on the top of a houseboat. Some talented cruisers played a variety of songs while the rest of us hung out in our dinghies or on the beach.

On Stocking Island is the famous “Chat’N’Chill” bar and beach. This is where you go when you want to hang out with other cruisers to talk boating or have a drink together. The island also offers several miles of well marked hiking trails - a pleasant surprise as hiking on the islands in general is not plentiful.
George Town has two good grocery stores and three liquor stores to reprovision, as well as a small farmers market three times a week. There’s a medical clinic, office supply store, bank and various other little stores, so no wonder this place is so popular among boaters.

We happened to run into two cruising couples that we had met a few months prior in the US, Gees and Arte from the Netherlands and Petra and Alfred from Germany. Petra celebrated her birthday while in George Town and so we had a nice celebration at the beach with cake, snacks, bonfire and music - a great memory!

Wir haben also die vergangenen 12 Tage in George Town verbracht, der Hauptstadt der Exumas, die auf der Insel Great Exuma liegt.
Wahrscheinlich landet jeder, der mit dem Boot in den Bahamas unterwegs ist, irgendwann einmal in George Town. Bei einer der wöchentlichen Bootszählungen erfuhren wir, dass zwischen Grand Exuma Island und Stocking Island 260 Boote vor Anker lagen, eine Zahl, die in der Hochsaison auf 400 ansteigen kann. Da die Boote über etwa 2 Meilen verteilt waren, fühlte es sich jedoch nie überfüllt an.

Jeden Tag um 8 Uhr morgens findet auf dem VHF Radio auf Kanal 72 eine Sendung statt. Hier können die Segler Neuigkeiten verkünden, um Hilfe bitten, Veranstaltungen organisieren und für örtliche Unternehmen werben.
Einige der Kreuzfahrer, die einen großen Teil der Saison in George Town verbringen, bieten eine ganze Reihe von Aktivitäten an, an denen man teilnehmen kann: Yoga, Wasseraerobic, Beachvolleyball, Dominos, Poker usw. Man erfährt in den morgendlichen Ankündigungen, wo und wann die Aktivitäten stattfinden, springt in sein Beiboot und macht einfach mit. Eine tolle Möglichkeit, neue Leute kennenzulernen!
Ein wirklich cooles Ereignis während unseres Aufenthalts war ein Konzert auf dem Dach eines Hausboots. Einige talentierte Cruiser trugen verschiedene Lieder vor, während wir anderen in unseren Beibooten oder am Strand chillten.

Auf Stocking Island befindet sich die berühmte Chat'N'Chill"-Bar mit Strand. Hierher kommt man, wenn man sich mit anderen Seglern über das Segeln unterhalten oder etwas trinken möchte. Die Insel bietet auch mehrere Meilen gut markierter Wanderwege - eine angenehme Überraschung, da es auf den Inseln im Allgemeinen nicht viele Wandermöglichkeiten gibt.
In George Town gibt es zwei gute Lebensmittelläden, drei Spirituosengeschäfte sowie dreimal wöchentlich einen kleinen Bauernmarkt. Es gibt eine Arztpraxis, ein Geschäft für Bürobedarf, eine Bank und verschiedene andere kleine Geschäfte, kein Wunder also, dass dieser Ort bei Bootsfahrern so beliebt ist.

Wir trafen zufällig zwei Seglerpaare, die wir einige Monate zuvor in den USA kennen gelernt hatten: Gees und Arte aus den Niederlanden und Petra und Alfred aus Deutschland. Petra feierte in George Town ihren Geburtstag, und wir hatten eine schöne Feier am Strand mit Kuchen, Snacks, Lagerfeuer und Musik - eine tolle Erinnerung!
