St. Thomas - Gateway to the Caribbean

We timed our stay in St. Thomas to coincide with the upcoming Carnival activities, the second largest carnival in the Caribbean. While there had been events in previous months, the main celebration was about to begin on April 28, with the most popular events starting on May 2. This gave us a few days to catch up on mundane things like grocery shopping and laundry, but also to explore the capital of the USVI, Charlotte Amalie, and the surrounding area.

Charlotte Amalie has a population of about 10,000, but is visited by over 1.5 million cruise ship guests each year. Since every U.S. citizen, including children, can bring home $1,600 worth of duty-free goods, there are plenty of souvenir shops and high-end stores, especially jewelry, as well as a wide variety of tour operators to keep them entertained.
We strolled the cobblestone alleys, Dronningens Gade or Main Street, the main artery and famous street with many unique and glamorous shops, and admired the 17th century Danish Fort Christian as well as the many colonial buildings throughout the historic district.

No visit to Charlotte Amalie would be complete without climbing the 99 steps (actually 103) built from the ballast stones of the tall ships that came from the Old World and returned to Europe laden with the islands' products. Along the way, the staircase offers stunning views of the historic district and is a perfect example of the practical and beautiful Danish colonial architecture that is prevalent throughout the city.

From the top of the 99 steps, we continued up the hill to the Charlotte Amalie Overlook, which gave us a magnificent view of the harbor and our anchorage, and from there to Drake's Seat, another scenic overlook on the north side of St. Thomas. From this special vantage point we enjoyed a panoramic view of the crystal clear turquoise water, the lush green hills and pristine beach of Magen's Bay, and St. John's and the British Virgin Islands in the background.

Another walk took us to the top of Flag Hill. We could have saved some time and taken the Paradise Point Skyride, which takes you up in less than 10 minutes, but a) it wasn't running that day as there were no cruise ships in town and b) we enjoyed the exercise. We had the whole observation deck to ourselves and enjoyed the view of the western part of St. Thomas as well as Culebra and Puerto Rico in the distance, our next destination.


St. Thomas - Tor zur Karibik

Unsere Ankunft in St. Thomas haben wir so gelegt, dass sie mit den bevorstehenden Karnevalsaktivitäten zusammenfiel. Zwar gab es auch in den vorangegangenen Monaten schon Veranstaltungen, doch die Hauptfeierlichkeiten sollten am 28. April beginnen, und die grössten Veranstaltungen ab dem 2. Mai stattfinden. Wir hatten also ein paar Tage Zeit, um so alltägliche Dinge wie Lebensmitteleinkäufe und Wäsche zu erledigen, aber auch um die Hauptstadt der USVI, Charlotte Amalie, und ihre Umgebung zu erkunden.

In Charlotte Amalie hat ungefähr 10.000 Einwohner, wird aber jedes Jahr von über 1,5 Millionen Kreuzfahrschiffgästen besucht. Da jeder US-Bürger, einschließlich Kinder, Waren im Wert von 1600 Dollar zollfrei mit nach Hause nehmen kann, gibt es jede Menge Souvenirshops und High-End-Geschäfte, besonders Juweliere, aber auch eine grosse Auswahl von Touranbietern und Unterwassersafaris, um den Besuchern etwas zu bieten.

Wir schlenderten durch die kopfsteingepflasterten Gassen, die Dronningens Gade oder Main Street, die Hauptverkehrsader und berühmte Straße mit vielen einzigartigen und glamourösen Geschäften, und bewunderten das dänische Fort Christian aus dem 17. Jahrhundert sowie die vielen Kolonialgebäude im historischen Viertel.

Kein Besuch in Charlotte Amalie wäre vollständig, ohne die 99 Stufen (eigentlich 103) zu erklimmen, die aus den Ballaststeinen gebaut wurden, die von den großen Schiffen aus der Alten Welt mitgebracht wurden um dann mit Produkten der Inseln beladen wieder nach Europa zurückzukehren. Auf dem Weg nach oben bietet die Treppe atemberaubende Ausblicke auf das historische Viertel und ist ein perfektes Beispiel für die praktische und schöne dänische Kolonialarchitektur, die in der ganzen Stadt vorherrscht.

Oben angekommen ging es weiter den Berg hinauf zum Charlotte Amalie Overlook, der uns einen herrlichen Blick auf den Hafen und unseren Ankerplatz bot, und von dort zum Drake's Seat, einem weiteren malerischen Aussichtspunkt auf der Nordseite von St. Thomas. Von diesem besonderen Aussichtspunkt aus genossen wir einen Panoramablick auf das kristallklare türkisfarbene Wasser, die üppig grünen Hügel und den unberührten Strand von Magen's Bay sowie St. John's und die Britischen Jungferninseln im Hintergrund.

Ein weiterer Spaziergang führte uns auf den Gipfel des Flag Hill. Wir hätten natürlich etwas Zeit sparen und mit einer Gondel des Paradise Point Skyride fahren können, der einen in weniger als 10 Minuten nach oben bringt, aber a) fuhr er an diesem Tag nicht, da keine Kreuzfahrtschiffe in der Stadt waren, und b) genossen wir die Bewegung. Wir hatten die gesamte Aussichtsplattform für uns allein und erfreuen uns an dem Blick auf den westlichen Teil von St. Thomas sowie in der Ferne auf unser nächstes Ziel, Culebra und Puerto Rico.
