The Biggest Party of the Year

The following days offered one highlight after the other.

The evening of April 30th was Steel Pan Tramp. St. Thomas' largest steel pan band, the "Rising Stars," performed their catchy music on a double-decker wagon pulled by a large truck. The band has its roots in an experimental steel drum program in the St. Thomas/St. John district aimed at preventing school dropouts and juvenile delinquency.
The program, which began as a summer project, became so successful that it was expanded into a year-round program called the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra. The Rising Stars have performed throughout the Caribbean and as goodwill ambassadors for the Virgin Islands as far away as Taiwan and Japan, as well as at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. and the Skyline Stage in Chicago, Illinois.
Crowds lined the route, enjoying the infectious rhythms and sheer power of the pan players, who created a full range of harmonies that had people tapping their feet and singing along.


Wednesday night's concert at the Carnival Village flowed seamlessly into the next event, J'ouvert, a huge party that started in the early hours of Wednesday morning around 2 am. At that time we were still in bed, although we couldn't help but hear the music the entire time. By 7 a.m. we jumped in the dinghy, followed the noise and for a few hours joined the crowd in their joyful celebration of life and freedom.

A typical J'Ouvert outfit included denim shorts over fishnets with fluorescent sneakers, or see-through fabrics over colorful thongs and crop tops with boots. We were fascinated by some of the whimsical and outrageous outfits and surprised by the originality of the participants.
Dancers were then covered in powder paint and doused with water as they swayed to soca and reggae music blaring from countless speakers on trucks, paint running down their skin and staining their clothes.
J'ouvert lasts all day as carnival-goers dance in the streets and attend after-parties called fetes.

Friday and Saturday were the children's and adult's parades, which drew huge crowds with their elaborate costumes, choreographed dances, imaginative floats and plenty of soca, reggae and calypso music pumping through the streets. The two-mile parade route, lined with spectators, wound down Main Street to the Lionel Robert Stadium. We didn't realize that the parades last seven to eight hours as we marched slowly through the sun-drenched streets, desperately looking for a place to sit in the shade. There were plenty of booths with drinks and food, so there was no danger of getting dehydrated or starving while we once again enjoyed the great vibes, music and exotic costumes with with their vast amounts of feathers, beads and rhinestones. We couldn't help but admire the endurance of the islanders - we definitely couldn't keep up with them!

At nine o'clock Saturday night, during the last concert in the Carnival Village by international superstar Shaggy, Carnival 2024 came to a close with a beautiful fireworks display. By this time we were back on MAKAAN where we enjoyed a fantastic view.

Wow, what a week! We were glad we took the time to immerse ourselves in this display of the bright and vibrant culture of St. Thomas. Our time in St. Thomas has definitely been a colorful, impressive, and memorable one.

Die nächsten Tage boten ein Highlight nach dem anderen.

Am Abend des 30. April war Steel Pan Tramp angesagt. Die größte Steel-Pan-Band von St. Thomas, die "Rising Stars", spielten ihre ansteckende Musik auf einem doppelstöckigen Wagen, der von einem großen Lastwagen gezogen wurde. Die Band hat ihre Wurzeln in einem experimentellen Steeldrum-Programm , das Schulabbrüche und Jugendkriminalität verhindern sollte.
Das Programm, das als Sommerprojekt begann, wurde so erfolgreich, dass es zu einem ganzjährigen Programm mit dem Namen Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra ausgebaut wurde. Die Rising Stars sind in der gesamten Karibik und als Botschafter der Jungferninseln auch in Taiwan und Japan aufgetreten, ebenso wie im Kapitol in Washington, D.C. und auf der Skyline Stage in Chicago, Illinois.

Die Menge säumte den Weg und genoss die ansteckenden Rhythmen und die schiere Kraft der Pan-Spieler, die eine ganze Reihe von Harmonien kreierten, die die Leute zum Tanzen und Mitsingen animierten.


Das Konzert am Mittwochabend im Carnival Village ging nahtlos in die nächste Veranstaltung über, J'ouvert, eine riesige Party, die in den frühen Morgenstunden des Mittwochs gegen 2 Uhr begann. Um diese Zeit lagen wir noch im Bett, konnten allerdings die Musik die ganze Zeit über hören. Gegen 7 Uhr morgens hüpften wir ins Dinghy, folgten dem Lärm und schlossen uns für ein paar Stunden der Menge an, wie sie das Leben und die Freiheit feierte.
Zu den typischen J'Ouvert-Outfits gehörten Jeans-Shorts über Netzstrümpfen mit fluoreszierenden Turnschuhen oder durchsichtige Stoffe über bunten Tangas und Crop-Tops mit Stiefeln. Wir waren fasziniert von einigen der skurrilen und abgedrehten Outfits und überrascht von der Kreativität der Teilnehmer.
Anschließend wurden die Tänzerinnen und Tänzer mit Puderfarbe bestäubt und mit Wasser bespritzt, während sie sich zur Soca- und Reggae-Musik bewegten, die aus unzähligen Lautsprechern auf Lastwägen ertönte, wobei ihnen die Farbe über die Haut lief und ihre Kleidung verfärbte. Das J'ouvert erstreckt sich über den ganzen Tag. Die Teilnehmer tanzen erst auf den Straßen und gehen dann zu Parties, den sogenannten "fêtes".


Am Freitag und Samstag fanden die Festumzüge für Kinder und Erwachsene statt, die mit ihren aufwändigen Kostümen, choreografierten Tänzen, fantasievollen Wagen und viel Soca-, Reggae- und Calypso-Musik eine große Menschenmenge anzogen. Die zwei Meilen lange Umzugsstrecke, die von Zuschauern gesäumt war, schlängelte sich die Main Street hinunter zum Lionel-Robert-Stadion. Wir wussten nicht, dass die Umzüge sieben bis acht Stunden dauern, als wir langsam durch die sonnenüberfluteten Straßen schlenderten und verzweifelt nach einem Platz im Schatten suchten. Es gab viele Stände mit Getränken und Essen, so dass keine Gefahr bestand, zu verdursten oder zu verhungern, während wir wieder einmal die tolle Stimmung, die Musik und die exotischen Kostüme mit ihren Unmengen an Federn, Perlen und Strasssteinen bestaunten. Also eines muss man den Einheimischen lassen - Ausdauer haben sie und wir konnten definitiv nicht mit ihnen mithalten!

Um 21 Uhr am Samstagabend, während des letzten Konzerts, diesmal mit dem internationalen Superstar Shaggy im Carnival Village, ging der Karneval 2024 mit einem tollen Feuerwerk zu Ende. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren wir bereits zurück auf MAKAAN, von wo aus wir eine fantastische Aussicht genießen konnten.

Wow, was für eine Woche! Wir waren froh, dass wir uns die Zeit genommen haben, um die bunte und lebendige Kultur von St. Thomas zu erleben. Unser Aufenthalt in St. Thomas war definitiv bunt, beeindruckend und unvergesslich.
