San Nicolas

There are few anchorages in Aruba and most boats stay close to Oranjestad and the nearby marina. But we checked out three other anchorages southeast of Oranjestad and the area surrounding them.

From one, a 30-minute walk brought us to San Nicolas, Aruba's second largest city, known for its picturesque Baby Beach and colorful murals and street art.
There are about 50 murals within a three by three block area (80x60 meters per block), with styles ranging from realistic optical illusion to surreal to indigenous techno. There was amazing talent at work here.

Stopping at the San Nicolas Information Center to get a map of the murals, we learn that the Island Fest will be held that evening, a good reason to come back later in the day.

The festival is set up in the middle of historic San Nicolas and offers a variety of attractions including delicious local and multicultural food, live bands and presentations of Aruba's rich culture and history.
A show blending various media - slides, music and dance - brings the heritage and traditions to life, followed by a performance of a small-scale Aruban carnival.
We sample some of the culinary delights and are hooked on the poffertjes, a traditional Dutch sweet that resembles small, fluffy pancakes.
Sitting at one of the tables set up in front of the extensively renovated 1940's Nicolas store, we enjoy a drink, listen to the music and people watch.
As a special surprise, the festival organizers have arranged a drone show. What a colorful way to bring a delightful evening to a close!



San Nicolas
Es gibt nur wenige Ankerplätze in Aruba, und die meisten Boote bleiben in der Nähe von Oranjestad und dem nahe gelegenen Yachthafen. Wir haben jedoch in drei andere Ankerplätze südöstlich von Oranjestad Zeit verbracht und uns die Umgebung angesehen.

Von einem dieser Ankerplätze führt ein 30-minütiger Spaziergang nach San Nicolas, der zweitgrößten Stadt Arubas, die für ihren malerischen Baby Beach und ihre farbenfrohen Wandmalereien und Straßenkunst bekannt ist.
In einem Gebiet von drei mal drei Häuserblocks gibt es etwa 50 Wandmalereien, deren Stil von realistischen optischen Täuschungen über surreale Kunst bis hin zu indigenem Techno reicht. Hier waren schwer talentierte Künstler am Werk!

Im Informationszentrum von San Nicolas erhalten wir eine Karte der Wandmalereien und erfahren, dass am Abend das Island Fest stattfindet - ein guter Grund, später am Tag wiederzukommen.

Das Fest spielt sich mitten im historischen San Nicolas ab und bietet eine Vielzahl von Attraktionen, darunter köstliche lokale und multikulturelle Speisen, Live-Bands und Präsentationen über Arubas reiche Kultur und Geschichte.
Eine Show mit einer Mischung aus verschiedenen Medien - Dias, Musik und Tanz - erweckt das Erbe und die Traditionen zum Leben, gefolgt von einer Aufführung des arubanischen Karnevals in Kleinformat.

Selbstverständlich probieren wir einige kulinarische Köstlichkeiten und sind besonders von den Poffertjes angetan, einer traditionellen holländischen Süßspeise, die kleinen, fluffigen Pfannkuchen ähnelt und in einer speziellen Pfanne zubereitet wird.
Vor dem aufwändig restaurierten Nicolas Store sind Tische und Stühle aufgestellt, wo wir gemütlich etwas trinken, der Musik zuhören und die Leute beobachten können.

Als besondere Überraschung haben die Organisatoren des Festivals eine Drohnenshow organisiert. Was für eine farbenfrohe Abrundung eines stimmungsvollen Abends!
