Exuma

Rick
From Black Pt. we continued sailing down the Exuma chain to Lee Stocking Island, lost a Mahi Mahi which we had just about landed on Makana, that’s why it’s called “fishing” not “catching”. A front was forecasted to cross the islands so we needed to seek better protection than Black Pt.offered. There are free moorings available at the Perry Caribbean Marine Research Center with excellent protection so we grabbed a mooring and explored the island. The island has the distinction of having the highest point in the Exuma’s, Perry’s Peak which tops out at 129 feet with spectacular views. Later that day I went spear fishing with Corbett from Cookie Monster and we each scored a lobster on the north side of Normans Pond Cay. My total lobster count to date is 4 with as many lost. While fishing off Tug & Barge I had a large as in 8 foot wide ray swim by. They are usually afraid of people and tend to swim away this guy had a different outlook. He swam directly towards me and chased me back into the dingy.
Our next destination was Children’s Bay Cay where we anchored along with several of our friends. After a morning exploring the beaches we went spear fishing. No luck although I did decided to cut the expedition short when I encountered a seven foot shark while fishing off Windsock Cay. When the fish are large than me and I become part of the food chain and for the second time in as many days I was chased back into the dingy.
The next day we had a great sail down to GeorgeTown with two of our friends’ boats each catching a tuna, no luck on Makana. Later after a hike on Stocking Island and beach activities we had fresh sushi aboard Cookie Monster while watching the sunset. We’ll be in George Town for a few days as it’s a great place to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies as we’re down to only the canned variety.
