Mid Winter

We departed Emerald Bay Marina late afternoon to coincide with a slack water entrance into the cuts from the sound to banks side of the Exuma islands chain. Depending on the tidal state at some of the cuts the currents can run in excess of 5 knots with 6-8 foot tall standing waves. Four nights were spent around Lee Stocking Island where we rode out a cold front which actually brought some cold air as it was 69 degrees inside our cabin one morning and we had hot soup after snorkeling as well! The snorkeling and fishing around Normans Cay is spectacular and was also where I scored lobsters # 15 & 16 along with a Tiger grouper which we shared with several other boats for dinner later that evening. Hoku had the opportunity to do some water skiing with some friends she met from Whispering Cay. She got up on her second try and spent the rest of the day being towed around the “peaceful” anchorage on skis or a surfboard.
We departed early morning to return to George Town where we’ll spend the rest of the month. The stretch of water from Lee Stocking to George Town has been one of the most productive in terms of fish and this trip was no exception with us landing a nice size female Mahi Mahi. One part of me was hoping we didn’t catch a fish as with all the treats we’ve been eating from the sea I was ready for a land based meal like a steak! However once the fish was served for dinner that evening I was more than grateful for the fish which is indescribable especially when fresh as in two hours old.
