Bicycle made to fold

01 December 2009 | Georgetown, Grand Cayman
VC
In the bottom of the dinghy is Richard's fold up Dahon bike. He is holding mine ready to ride, on the dock in Georgetown, Grand Cayman.
We stow both the bikes away behind the sewing machine in the quarter berth and they come out for an airing whenever we are somewhere accessible to a bike.
The island is pretty low lying and flat and we have cycled all over it doing errands, grocery shopping, reaching a cricket match near the airport and going on a 17 mile sightseeing expedition to the north sound and Pedro Point.
At certain times of the day even Grand Cayman has a traffic jam through town and it is great fun to go shooting up the inside of stopped cars all the way to the front. We have hauled diesel and water on the bikes and in Corinto, Nicaragua we did a major provisioning trip with the aid of backpacks, canvas grocery bags and bungy cord. Taxis in Cayman are EXPENSIVE and we have saved quite a bit by not hailing them, instead hopping on the bicycles. It is another way to stay fit and we keep our carbon footprint very, very tiny.
When we are in a place for a couple of weeks we find a safe place to chain them on land. Here we asked some bicycle taxi men if we could park them on their property. A six pack of beer clinched the deal.
Now they are all cleaned, oiled and folded up in their place on board waiting to meet some old Cuban bikes in a few days. We set sail in the morning for Cienfuegos on the southern coast of Cuba which we should reach by Friday December 4th, ahead of a cold front coming off the U.S.
