All plans written in the sand at low tide. Oft cited by cruisers at the whim of wind, wave and mechanical breakdowns this aphorism continues to describe our state accurately. We have now been in Deltaville for two months, working on the boat, Virginia working evenings cooking in a local restaurant, meanwhile we toss around ideas for our immediate future.
The plan, such as it was, called for us to take Mandy to Annapolis after this makeover, and there put her in the hands of a broker to sell. But the more we contemplate all the steps necessary to fully re-engage in our old life the less attractive they seem. We have no car, but bicycles and the occasional rental car seem to work fine. We have no house to live in, but Mandy, though small, has served that purpose well. We have a very low cost of living. To re-engage means to quadruple it overnight. We do need to make a living, but this is a problem that can be solved just as well living on board as in a house.
So, the germ of a plan has incubated. We will keep Mandy and sail when we want to. At other times we will store her, visit friends and family and have a break from her small confines, to more enjoy her on our return.
So the blog will be revived, once again to be the child we still have to feed, and we will try to use the lessons we have learned from it and our eighteen months adventure to develop a website with more and broader content.
A good friend, Andrew Hall, wrote to us noting:
"You have had some great time in which to experience what is important in
life and the conundrum that wealth and material possessions do not guarantee
any certainty of happiness, whilst the simple things of life such as
family, good friends, a magnificent sunset and the odd glass of white wine,
the dawn chorus that follows it and the dew of a new morning can really
bring a contentment that no amount of money can."
Easy to observe it, now we will see what it is like to live it.
