SOUTHING AND THEN HOLDING
08 June 2010 | 40 Miles from Nuku Hiva

The Marquesas are in sight! This morning at 930, just after light(in this part of the Pacific thats 9 AM!)I spied in the distance the faint, foggy outlines of the island of Ua Huka. It still astounds me that with modern navigation, I was able to label this spot and 3000 miles later be exactly 'pinpoint' on target. That which Im not on target with is: given the course/speed at 0930 this morning, I would have reached Nuku Hiva, my destination, just as it was getting dark. So, to comply with the hard and fast rule of 'no night landings' Ive started a southing and holding. I am on a course much farther south than necessary and will soon turn back on course timed to arrive about day break, tomorrow. Frustrating.... as my destination is a 'stone's throw' from here....but, after all this time at sea....what's another night?
