HAPPY THANKSGIVING (while mulling the "Wild Coast")

25 November 2011 | Richards Bay

First of all a belated "Happy Thanksgiving" to those in the USA-hope it was fun. Am sitting here in Tuzi Gazi Marina and making decisions as to boat repairs...either here or in Durban. Interestingly and quite true to the tales regarding SWesters, one of these storms rushes up the coast about every 3-4 days bringing with it strong winds. While the locals swear up and down its supposed to be 'hot, very hot' this time of year, we have had nothing but rain and cold since arriving. The boat and I could do with a little of that heat.

Once I start south down the coast this is apparently the procedure. At the end of one of these southwest storms, one rushes out directly to that fast moving current, the Agulhas current about 10 miles off shore. One rides it down at great speed (ones boat speed plus the 2-5 knots of current) to the next port, dashes in before the new storm comes roaring up the coast, waits, and then repeat the procedure to the next stop. There are about 4-5 stops before CapeTown. And again, the trick is to ride the current with the wind going the SAME direction as the current, south.

All the best from South Africa!
