Finding the Wind

We've had a long but pleasant day, motoring to the northeast to get out of the North Atlantic high with its associated light and fickle winds. The issue has been to manage our fuel so that we reach the wind, but have enough fuel for later needs. At 1730 this afternoon we decided that the time had come, and we raised our sails in a slowly strengthening southwest breeze and shut off the engine. It is still slow sailing, but we're making headway and, with any luck, will only see stronger fair winds from here. The day has been splendid, with beautiful clear skies and a deep blue ocean. It has actually been hot! We've had visits from a local greeting committee of dolphins, and have enjoyed watching them feed. Ian had a visit from a curious pilot whale last night. We have seen some interesting human detritus. Last night I spied something floating by and shone my light on a construction helmet...floating merrily along. All sorts of trash, especially styrofoam, float by. When we were in the Western Atlantic we saw lots of Mylar balloons, but we haven't seen any over here. I think that our best find was a Playmate cooler, in mid ocean, floating upright. We considered picking it up, but ultimately passed on the opportunity. We're well, but there is a definite lack of interesting news! It looks like we'll reach Kinsale on Wednesday. We are healthy, happy, and well aboard the good ship Margalo.
