Today I grabbed a "Medianoche" or "Midnight" Sandwich from our local Cuban Market for Hal and I. Boy! Are
Medianoches addictive! They are flattened and grilled sandwiches of ham, pork, swiss cheese and pickles with mustard and butter distributed generously throughout. Delicious!
I 'captained' the dinghy out to Tavernier Key. Hal keeps changing the outboards out, trying to decide which one for which dinghy. Though the Nissan engine today was larger (physically) I think I prefer the Tomas as a simpler and faster engine. No reverse, air-cooled and small enough I might be able to think about lifting and manhandling it onto the boat.
It was fabulous being on the water today! The shallows were thick with Eagle Rays (
Myliobatis tenuicaudatus) and Short-tailed Stingrays (
Dasyatis brevicaudata). The lee-side water was crystal clear, with that gorgeous diamonding effect that gives the appearance of paned glass. We drifted over several large barrel sponges and I managed to drift right over a crab trap line. So I got a lesson in how to tip the engine. Another plus for the Tomas as it is much lighter!
By the time we circumnavigated Tavernier Key - LOL! - the winds were picking up a bit and a few white caps were showing. Time to head back.
I really do wish these McMansions didn't look exactly the same! Is our canal the one by the pink fortress with the tiki hut to the right or the coral-colored one with the tiki hut to the left? Actually, ours has a weird octagonal gray house to the left coming into the canal if you are dropping by for a visit!
