Day 2: Bandaras Bay Regatta
Friday, March 23ed. Both Davids spent all morning working on the engine. We dismantled and replaced the impeller for the raw water pump. We unhooked and cleaned filters, hoses, heat exchanger, etc. We got everything back together about 1:00 P.M. We cranked the engine and let it run for 30 minutes. The raw water pump was kicking out a stream and there was no overheating. We congratulated ourselves on the good work we had done. Marj and Ginger spent the day contacting the Mexican insurance company and trying to keep us out of deep trouble. When all was finished, it was just too late to make the second day of racing. Besides, we had hardly recovered from the hard work of racing and the accident on the previous day.
Don’t worry – Be happy! Right! So we went for a “jungle tour” in the dinghy and found many iguanas, a large crocodile, and many nice birds. We stopped at the Fajita Republic Restaurant and had seafood molcajetas, tuna poci, garlic fish/sausage tacos, octopus tacos and other good things for a very late lunch. Really good stuff. Then to the boat and siestas.
The event for the evening was a fish fry buffet at the yacht club, which we did attend. We sat at a table with Chris, Joel and Bob from s/v 40-Love (all from Minnesota) and had a good conversation. It turns out that Bob is a serious birder and was anxious to get out on a birding trip. We planned a trip for Saturday morning before the races.
We were able to learn the results of the days racing. The boat that had corrected to first had won the race again. The second and third boats were boats that had missed marks and were disqualified on day one. These results left Kievit a chance for a second place finish, if we could finish first or second on the final race on Saturday.
Could we do it?
