RUBY FRIES IS 15! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
03 March 2013 | PUERTO ESCONDIDO, MEXICAN
SUNSET SAILORS
Thirty two hours after leaving Acapulco, Kievit arrived Puerto Escondido, an idyllic fishing village and world class surfing town known as the “Mexican Pipeline.” Anchoring is a little tricky, as the most protected part of the small bay is filled with fishing pangas, as it should be. As Heather’s Guidebook says: “What makes this area good for surfers is what makes this area uncomfortable for boaters, and that is swell.” We can confirm that, and though we planned to stay another night and explore town today, we’ll be pulling anchor and scooting out of here by 10 AM.
After Dave had a quick nap yesterday, we surf landed the dinghy on the beach (the protected Bay, not the Pipeline) much to the delight of the Mexican families enjoying Saturday evening on the beach. It seemed like we the only gringos in town. We each had plates of local fish prepared differently – all delicious, while sitting at a cloth covered plastic table with kerosene lantern light, on the beach, and in the company of other Mexican families.
We all got wet on the dinghy ride back to Kievit, Jumped in bed at 8:30 pm and, except for checking to make sure we weren’t on the rocks even though it sounded like it, didn’t get up till sunrise on March 3, Happy 15th Birthday, dear Ruby Fries.
