Bold Color Punctuates the Landscape
We are in El Salvador! Since the last post from Chiapas, we’ve sailed 245 miles, past Guatemala and into Bahia del Sol. Looking back, it was a pretty fun sail, since we had lots more wind than we expected or for which we had prepared the boat. And of course, it really got dicey in the middle of the night on Marj’s watch. That was the 2nd night, so we were both pretty tired. And the engine which was proclaimed fixed a couple months ago, seemed to be overheating, and we feared losing engine power if needed. We arrived, no one lost or injured, no missing or broken boat parts, and it’s always fun to be on Kievit when she ‘s sailing like she’s in command, a great ocean going vessel.
Now, we have decided to just hang out here until June. The marina is inside an estuary (or lagoon) that has a big sand bar at its entrance. You can get in or out only on days when there is a high tide during daylight, and the waves aren't too high. If you go out to sail one day, you can't get back in until the next day at high tide. The marina is at a resort hotel complex and there are two pools and access to the ocean. I can fish in the lagoon, but haven't yet. Birding is good. There are regular buses into larger towns or San Salvador, the capital, which is about one hour away. We have been on several tour trips to Mayan ruins, volcanoes, small villages in the mountains, etc. Salavadorians are friendly and helpful. It's all pretty interesting and we aren't bored yet!
