UP IN THE CLOUDS
20 April 2013 | EL SALVADOR
We are planning at least two more trips. One several day trip to San Salvador, the capital city of about 3 million, where we will do some sight seeing, take in some museums and do some shopping for the boat. A second and more interesting trip will be a two week venture into Guatemala. We will spend 4 days at a lodge in the cloud forest where the main activity will be bird watching. We expect to spend several additional days in the higher cloud forest area hiking and birding on our own. A visit to the old colonial town of Antiqua is also planned on this trip.
As for Kievit, we have decided to leave her here on a mooring ball from June to mid-October. The estuary is safe from hurricanes and strong winds are uncommon. The rainy season starts in May and there is some concern about lightning, but that would be the case any place the boat is left down here. We will unplug all of the electronic equipment possible and store it the oven or other large metal containers (Faraday Cages). Part of the mooring service is weekly opening and airing out of the boat, cleaning inside or out if necessary, monthly cleaning of barnacles from the boat’s bottom paint, checking of zincs, etc. So, we think it is a safe as most places to leave the boat and we will be contributing to the local economy. The International Airport is close by and flying in and out is relatively easy.
