BECOMING THE BOAT COMMUNITY IN BAHIA DEL SOL
20 April 2013 | EL SALVADOR
HAND MADE PANGAS PLY THE LAGOON
The Rally is at the Hotel Bahia del Sol. It is located on a narrow peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and a large estuary or lagoon. There is a dangerous sandbar at the mouth of the entrance to the estuary. One can get in or out only at slack high tide on days when the wave swell isn't greater than 5-6 feet. A pilot boat has to lead you across the sandbar in either direction. So, once you are in with your boat, you are pretty much trapped until you leave. The estuary is large but shallow in many places and not good for sailing. One can dinghy around or hire one of the local fishing boats (pangas) to take you places. We have done both. Also, there are "chicken buses" that run regularly from the road in front to the hotel to several larger cities. It's not so bad being trapped here as the hotel has a small marina (20 boats), two swimming pools, restaurants, and an ocean front beach on the far side. We had one interesting panga tour to the Rio Lempa, which connects into the estuary after much winding through channels around mangrove covered islands. It is El Salvador's longest river. The north side of the river runs fresh to the ocean, and on a flood tide the south channel is salt water.
