We made a two week trip to Guatemala in May. Transportation was a significant cultural experience of the trip. We left the boat by dinghy and caught the local chicken bus to San Salvador. From there we traveled to Guatemala City in a modern coach bus which was very pleasant. We were picked up at the bus terminal (Holiday Inn) by Mario, our driver booked by the lodge, in his comfortable, air conditioned car, and transported to the Earth Lodge, an eco-reserve 15 mi above the old (16th century) Guatemala city, Antigua We spent two nights there, hiking, looking for birds and enjoying the good food that came from the Earth Lodge Kitchen. This area is cloud forest, and one morning the clouds cleared to reveal the volcano towering over Antiqua and opposite the Lodge.
