2015 FRIES SAILING
21 January 2015 | BAHIA DEL SOL, COSTA RICO
DOS AMIGAS
We spent another week getting sails on and other regular maintenance, as well as a good cleaning. Our friend from Stockton, Kari Burr, flew into Chiapas on 14 Jan and we were off sailing the next day. The first sail was from Chiapas to Bahia del Sol, El Salvador. The trip is about 230nm and took about 44 hr. We slowed down the last hours so that we wouldn't arrive too far ahead of slack high tide, when we could cross the sandbar (with the help of a pilot boat) and enter the estuary. The trip was pretty much uneventful except for some dysfunction of the GPS plotter. It turned out to be a worn cable which we found, cut and spliced. It worked great the rest of the sail. Seas where moderate and winds varied from 0 to 25 knots along the trip. We were on sail only for about one-half of the trip, then it was motor sailing or just motoring the rest of the way. A bummer during the sail was poor fishing success. We caught 6-10 black skipjacks which aren't good for anything except bait. We did arrive several hours ahead of the high tide and were able to have a swim while waiting for the pilot boat.
