Dave and I had been on a similar trip several years ago with the cruisers’ rally, which had been where my friendship began with Isabel. Then, it was her first time to go on the boat trip to tell the family stories about the Estuary and her father’s history of living here for 95 years. That time Isabel told her stories in Spanish and our host, Bill, translated. However, during that trip only three years ago, Isabel and I discovered that we could communicate quite well. And I was charmed by her intellect and wit. Today, Isabel retold the creation of the Estuary in 1934, when it rained for weeks and high ocean water broke through the mangroves, where the bar is today. The jungle was flooded, killing many animals, including jaguars and monkeys, and also people. Amadeo took us through a channel of the wonderfully mysterious mangroves. Even today you better watch out for crocodiles there! We did, but didn’t see any.
