THE LAW OF AVERAGES

The Law of Averages.
I am thinking as I pen a few thoughts together, that 5 or 6 days of fairly substandard weather should reap a reward of at least that amount (or more) of beautiful, calm and balmy days - just to balance the scale! The rain and wind are particularly pronounced right now by the fact we have visitors on board. We all want to do things, sail places, dive into the briny and splash like dolphins. Our quick dive yesterday was a bracing shower on the back deck with only one in four crazy enough to test the water temperature below. A poor average one could say.
Food, wine and conversation have played an important role in entertaining us the last few days, and given it is family on board, that has been enough to keep one entertained. As yet, the sailing yarns have not run dry and in between gusts and downpour we have ventured bravely forth in the kayaks and dingy, getting a taste of the world beyond living on a 50 foot catamaran.
So now I pause - why do friends and family venture on a cruising holiday?
Surely it would be to experience the live aboard life of a sailor. To feel the elements first hand - the slap of waves on hull, the sting of salt in their eyes, the sight of foam awash on deck. To try their hand at something unique - a steel needle in hand, wax thread in the other; oil and brush technique for teak; deck wash and scrub for a saintly sparkle, or just some simple whipping to neaten a sheet. I feel a little more mellow about the weather now - the sun will show its face eventually, the sea breeze will sedate us again. For now we shall be content with experiencing the elements, and trying out something exclusively boatie!
