From Mexico to Costa Rica

13 May 2012 | Playa del Cocos
C. Farias/hot and overcast
As mangas no Mexico sao deliciosas.
E o nosso presente do dia.
A capitania dos portos estava fechada e so abre segunda feira. Rosa, deu um corte excelente, que me custou 7,000 colones (12 US$) e segunda vou voltar pra pintar. Almocamos comida tipica da Costa Rica, nao tao diferente da nossa no norte do Brasil: arroz, feijao preto, peixe grelhado, salada de repolho e banana comprida frita. Eles chamam o prato de cassado. Se for so arroz, feijao e ovos ou carne, o prato e chamado galo pinto.
And now, my English version:

We are finally out of the hurricane zone area. We arrived in Costa Rica. We said adios to Mexico in Chiapas a week ago. Slowly due to the fact that we have only one rudder, and the lack of wind, we sailed thru Guatemala, El Salvador and Niguaragua. These countries have a beautiful coast line but unfortunately due to the rudder problem we arrived there too late and couldn't stop to explore it.
On our last day in Mexico we saw trash in the streets and dirty water for the first time. The protocol for the checkout was huge and even with an agent it took an entire day. By the middle of the hottest possible day the agent told us that we all had to go to the airport to deal with immigration. In a small car, the 5 of us plus the driver and the agent, drove to the airport. In our way back, in a road side stand we bought bananas, pineapple, rambutan and magoes!!! The mangoes in Mexico are delicious.
Our plan was to leave Chiapas in the end of the day but the last step to checking out is a inspection by the port authorities and police. They didn't come and by radio we told them that we needed to leave by 6AM next day. They replied that they would come by 5:30AM. The bets started to see how late they would arrive. The earliest we expected their arrival was 9AM. We were wrong. At exactly 5:30 I heard the knock at the hull and there they were: 2 police man, 2 Port officials and another one with the dog. They inspect the boat for drugs and for archeological artifacts, to make sure that no one is taking these. We had the same inspection done when we arrived in Chiapas just 2 days prior. The agents were all very polite and after a lot of paperwork they wished us a Buena viagem.
In this leg of the trip we caught 6 mackerel, a kind of bonito that has a very dark flesh, like liver. We let them loose as we didn't want to eat them. After so many bonitos we decided to retire the fish rods for awhile.
The days at sea, without wind, are slow but the seas are calm. My biological clock is still not adjusted but it is getting better. The routine is slowly taking place. There is always someone sleeping or eating at all times, and I am often one of those.
Our first stop in Costa Rica, where we are now, is in Playa del cocos. We went ashore to do our check in and the first thing we did was to drink water from a cold coconut. The office of the port captain was closed and we will have to go back on Monday. Playa del cocos is a small touristic town with lots of amenities, such as bank, supermarkets, restaurants, lots of craft and junk shops and 2 hairdressers!! I went to one for a much needed haircut and Rosa gave me a very good one for 7,000 colones (about 12 US$).
We ate local food for lunch which consisted of black beans, rice, cabbage salad, grilled fish and fried plantains. Simple but good. They call the dish cassado.
We now have a long list of things that needs to be fixed, too long for me to take the time to write. I can hear Paul very exasperated, mumbling "why can't these bloody boat builders do things right in the first place"? or "I hate boat builders" as he goes on fixing and fixing.
Happy Mother's day to you all and hasta luego.
