Kenutu Island

Malo e lelei. Kenutu Island in Tonga is the prettiest place we seen in Tonga. To get here we had to go thru a shallow and narrow pass, Fanua Tapu, the kind that keeps us all with an eye on the depth sounder and the other in the reefs, bommies and shallow waters all around. There are no markers, and we had to weave thru the shallows and all. Fortunately it is a short run and the sun, although it was partially cloudy, was in our back. There are no houses nor people in Kenutu. Besides Mauliola there is another boat with our friends Steve and Michele. The anchorage is absolutely one of the best. The powerful waves breaking on the outside of the small Lolo Island is dramatic and contrasts with the peaceful turquoise waters in this side of Lolo. The ocean floor is covered with star fish and sea cucumbers. Today I snorkeled in the shallow waters, 5 feet deep, just off the beach in Kenutu and found some huge kind of mussel. They were about 10" long. I didn't have my camera with me but I will be back tomorrow. I would love to stay here for many days but we need to go back to Neiafu in a few days to pick up parts for our water makers. We have one broken and the other is starting to behave as it shouldn't. Our sat phone is also behaving in an erratic, temperamental way.. Only works when it wants to. Other than that and a few dozen of other "small" boat problems that we hope to fix prior to the crossing to New Zealand, we are happy and well. We are still not clear about Jerry's ear. Hopefully it is OK. We will know if a few days as he went swimming for the first time since the problem started. I hope I can get a connection on the ssb radio to sent this. Sorry but I can't send photos. Aloha to all and until next post.
