Cadiz in the afternoon


We had a lovely short sail to Rota where we stayed for one night. An attractive town with strong moorish influences. Up market feel to it and beautiful beaches.

Leaving Rota to get to Cadiz you cross the bay where the Battle of Trafalgar took place a bit further south. Admiral Nelson made history in 1805 with his 27 ships when he charged the combined fleet of 33 French and Spanish ships, preventing Napoleon's invasion. Although he won the battle, Nelson was fatally shot by a French marine and is buried in St. Pauls Cathedral. Anyone reading Patrick O'Brian's series of 20 books will recollect the detail of many a naval battle.

The ancient city of Cadiz is fascinating and well worth a visit. It was founded by the Phoenicians over 3000 years ago, then settled by the Romans and Moors. Much of its architecture dates back to the 18th century. We enjoyed our time here very much.
