Bula! Arrived in Fiji

31 August 2018 | Savusavu Fiji
The sail from Tonga to Fiji was as good as any Passage can be. Nice 15-20knt following winds and 1.5m waves. We reefed and unreefed a couple of times but made it all the way on one gybe. We had planned the journey to arrrive in the outer reefs of the Lau island group at dawn but Mazu ran faster than expected. Fortunately we had a big fat moon to guide us and the route through the islands proved to be more straightforward than reported. We departed with 3 other boats and had to meet up with two of them during the first day because one of them had broken a shroud. We stood by in case they needed our assistance but they managed to secure a temporary hold so they could carry on. Those two boats travelled together and we set off.
We only saw one other boat during our trip. It's a big ocean but they hailed us on the VHF when our AIS showed that we were on a collision course. We were the "give way" boat but Peter explained to them that our sail configuration of prevented main sail and poled out and prevented gyb made it difficult for us to adjust our course so they kindly adjusted theirs.
We arrived in Savusavu at 2am and found a safe anchorage outside of the town until morning. It only took 2.5 days instead of 3.

The check in to Fiji was so efficient and pleasant. The marina conveniently organizes all of the officials to come to the boat. First the Health officials came on to make sure we were not bringing any communicable diseases. After asking us 20 times how we were feeling they were convinced that we were healthy. That's when they told us all of the potential diseases we could pick up in Fiji, Dengue fever, Meningococcas, and one other I cannot recall. Then the immigration and customs ladies came on board. They asked as many questions about how they could come to Canada as where we were going in Fiji. We thought we may have to pay duty on the excess alcohol we had on board. Instead they suggested that we drink some before we get to the next port. Peter quickly agreed. The final was the Biosecurity guy. Knowing that fresh fruit and veggies could not be brought to Fiji we had pulled out what we had left ready to hand it over. But they too said as long as we kept it in the boat we were Ok. Yippee! Then he recommended a great little curry place where we had lunch.

We are off to check out Fiji
