DAY 3 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN

06 December 2009 | 355 nm southwest of Gran Canaria
Blue skies again today
We've travelled only 112 nautical miles in the last 24 hours because our winds are light and while that's disappointing for the overall length of the trip, it is a very comfortable ride at the moment. We're feeling very fortunate too as we hear of other peoples troubles. Brad on Ghost in the ARC had to climb his mast to fix abroken piece, then right on dusk his kite wrapped around his forestay and while they managed to get that down ok one of his helpful crew started the motor with the sheet still dangling in the water. Around the prop it went and down into the water went Brad to free the prop in 3 metre seas. Not jealous! Our day wasn't nearly as dramatic. The coffee withdrawals and detox just got worse for me yesterday and I ended up with a thumping headache and seasick which is something quite unusual for me. So I put myself to bed early. At around 11.30pm Ray woke me and had all hands on deck because a vessel on the radar was on an intercept course with us and wasn't responding to Ray's calls on the VHF. Having heard plenty of pirate stories and being off the coast of Africa, Ray's mind automatically went to that as an opiton. The boat then started with a yellow strobe light which was even more weird. So, on went both motors and Sam and I went forward to pull in the screecher (no manouvrability under sail). Now pulling in the screecher is not an easy task at the best of times let alone in the dark with a bit of swell. I lost my balance and fell into one of the hatches but didn't hurt myself and Sam finished the job. I then went to the radio and called to the approaching vessel. Eventually a thick Spanish accent came back in broken English saying he was a fishing boat and 'no problem, no problem'. Well after establishing which direction he was going and advising him of ours the moment of tension passed and we were back on track to the Caribbean. Back to bed I went and was up for my watch at 2.30am and feeling much better. Sam stepped up to the plate and took a watch while Ray got some snooze time as well. Today was a very comfortable day but slow and we managed to do some routine jobs and watch a movie. The highllight today for same was passing level 3 on Heroes V Might of Magic The Conquest in the Demonic Campaign, after trying for 3 weeks. The Cutty Sark has taken a bit of a back seat for the moment too.

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
