DAY 17 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN

20 December 2009
still travelling with light winds
Wow...we clocked up 146 nautical miles since this time yesterday, our best day since crossing from Morocco to the Canaries. We flew!! Winds picked up from 12 knots to a constant 14-16 knots and then up pre-dawn to about 20 knots. We had the mainsail, the baby and the screecher out and at one point we were clocking along at 8.4 knots. If we could keep those winds all the way to the Caribbean we'd knock a couple of days off the trip. The winds have dropped this afternoon however so we're down to a very civilized 5.5-6 knots. The excitement for today was Ray's lure that he made from a muesli wrapper seemed to do the trick and attracted something with sharp teeth that took the whole rig. His next one was made from a taco sauce sachet (silver inside, red and yellow other side) and this time something just took the hook. As we were reeling it in a swordfish about a metre long kept diving for it...hard to catch things without a hook. On the maintenance front, looks like we're using too much power and since we're sailing rather than motoring we have to cut down. So one of the fridges had to go off. We're now operating out of the big freezer and the galley fridge is switched off. Only 5 sleeps now til Santa comes!

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
