DAY 21 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN

24 December 2009 | 683 miles from Martinique
tradewinds are returning
We had the first decent wind today for many days...up to 20 knots from the ENE and we made some great headway doing about 124 nautical miles in 24 hours. It's now 2am UTC and all's quiet except for the whoosh of water under the hull and the hum of the wind generator every now and again. It's a cloudy night but there's patches of stars casting their light on the water ahead of us and we're moving along steadily at around 5 knots. Ray's asleep in the cockpit where it's cool and Sam's in bed. I've just wrapped presents (such as they are). cleaned the saloon and put out the candy canes and fruit mince tarts I made tonight in preparation for Christmas Day. I'm thinking of our families back in Oz and how they will already be celebrating with Christmas lunch and enjoying the usual hot Christmas Day. Temperatures here are much the same as in Brisbane I would think...things have warmed up considerably since coming south. Well, that's it for me...time to wake Ray and take myself off shift and off to bed.

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
