DAY 25 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN
28 December 2009 | 241 nautical miles to Martinique
trade winds are light and a bit more swell today
Another reasonable day of travel clocking up 120 nautical miles since this time yesterday. We lost our dynamo power sail...yes the red and yellow screecher sheered it's halyard at the top of the mast, slid between the two hulls and out the back of the boat in the wee hours of this morning. When we tried hauling it in it tore away and was lost. I think it flew for the best part of 30 days and last night gave us up to 7 knots of speed. It was quite old and we were surprised it lasted as well as it did. Chafing on the other lines is evident too and Sam picked up a problem on the main halyard as well. So now we have the batwing configuation out again with the jib and the main and doing 5.5 knots...still respectable but we'll get in a little later I guess. Tosca had only 25 nm's to go this morning so they would be anchored and ashore, enjoying being landlubbers again with their crazy Jack Russel, Chester who I imagine is tearing up the beach in Porte du Marin as I write. Soujourn will make it to Barbados tonight around 8pm local time and then Argonaut and Meander will be next to make landfall. We expect to arrive in harbour on December30 if the winds remain with us. A note on the disasterous hair...fixed the black patch quite respectably and did a bit more clipping...it's probably tolerable now though it is very, very short.
