DAY 26 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN

29 December 2009 | 130 nautical miles to Martinique
winds have dropped and we're slow again
At this rate we'll be coming in to Martinique tomorrow night around dusk so maybe we'll be sipping a rum and watching the sunset SOMEWHERE ON LAND!!!! Last night just before sunset Ray put the port motor on and plumes of black smoke started coming out of the exhaust. Of course we knew that it must have been a bit of screecher that somehow became snagged on the prop and, sure enough, when Ray donned the goggles and snorkel and stuck his head under water, there it was in full living colour...a piece of the screecher was preventing the prop from unfeathering and putting stress on the gearbox. Again...we were lucky. Ray was able to remove the offending piece and there doesn't appear to be any damage to the prop or gearbox. Phew! Had popcorn and a movie or two last night, for something completely different in between Sam and I playing with watercolours. I'm trying my hand at a painting another boat in our flotilla, Fancy Free, from a photo I took in Lanzarote. We'll see how that goes. Today's been painfully slow which is very frustrating because we'd like to be travelling at speed toward our destination now. Herb has promised winds will build through the night so hopefully we'll get a push along tonight and tomorrow. No fish by the way...they've abandoned us. We're just finishing the last of our meat supplies so the timing's great. The last of the eggs are sticking to their shell...forgot to turn them on a daily basis...but they still smell and taste ok. Used the last onion and we have two potatoes left. I'm in to the tinned butter now but haven't needed the powdered milk yet. We've eaten all the tinned and dried fruit that I'd stocked up on and Ray and I are into beers each day since we're out of fruit juices, cordials and soft drinks. Sam's even resorted to opening and eating the tinned tomatoes from the can with a fork...I guess we're looking forward to getting hold of some fresh food again. I still have lemon juice though and we're just waiting for one last fish before we get into port...fingers crossed!

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
