We nearly forgot to visit the gorgeous stave church of which Torpo is famous! Built 1192, it is the oldest building in Hallingdal. This is one of two stave churches "signed" by the their craftsmen. In the Torpo stave churches runic inscriptions read: Torolf built this church.The church is dedicated to Saint Margareta.A stave church is a medieval wooden church with a post and beam construction related to timber framing. The wall frames are filled with vertical planks. The load-bearing posts (stafr in Old Norse, stav in Norwegian) have lent their name to the building technique. Apart from all that, it's gorgeous but only part of the original church. Inside the church (closed so we peaked through the window) is a model of the original church and it looked pretty wild.
