Day 7 Galapagos to French Polynesia

15 May 2010
Wind 18K SE
Today was a battle with the giant in more ways than one. Ray woke today to the sound of the kettle squealing and Simon, who was supposed to be on watch, nowhere to be seen. Giant number one....the fear of losing someone overboard and not knowing they're gone. But he found him in battle of his own on the back steps with something BIG! They couldn't wind this one in so it was all hands on deck and Ray and Mick pulled in the jib, then staysail in an effort to slow the boat and take the stress off the fishing line. They couldn't drop the main because the wind was too strong, so Ray started the motors, set them in reverse and eventually pulled the boat up. And the battle with Giant number two continued. One hour from the time it hit on the line the monster was on board. It was a 4.5 foot long Wahoo...too heavy for Simon to lift one handed (30 KG they think). And it tastes gooood apparently. The freezer is now full. Milo of course sat right beside Simon the whole time lending support....he likes Wahoo too.

COG 278T/SOG 7.4 knots - still doing big days 168 NM.
(This pic is not of our crew and is off "Quit Yer Bitchin' Charters" webpage...just to give you an idea of what a Wahoo looks like)

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
