QUESTION:
Any thoughts about guitars surviving in the cruising environment?
ANSWER:
Some very happy evenings have been spent with cruisers and their music, particularly guitars. I've never asked any of them just how well they survived, but most of them had been out for several years and were still playing their guitar. The humidity on the water is quite high, but it would seem to me that that would be good for an acoustic guitar (though the strings aren't going to last very long). I would think that the consistent humidity would be better for a wooden guitar than the cycle of extremely dry winter environment and quite humid summer environment of most instruments in the temperate zones on land suffer through. You would have to protect it from salt spray, and find a safe berth for it while under way, but the same would be said for the computers, electric keyboards, and one very sophisticated electric guitar and sound system that a Danish cruiser on his boat "Rock and Roll" carried.
Fair winds.
