The Fat Lady Sang

4th position..... That's where we finished race 14, the final race! With the winds getting lighter and lighter, we were quickly losing boat speed, and before I finished my night watch.... Australia had over taken us, and Qingdao was breathing down our neck!

Blog 22 - Almost There!

I know this is my second post for today... But I forgot to mention the advantage we had over Jamaica since this morning! We watched them blow out their spinny right in front of us!! It was spectacular sight! Sad for them.... Helpful to us!

Blog 21 - Pulling Away

After our disastrous start to this race, and fight upwind through the wind farms last evening, we managed to gain some mileage back on our competitors! On my night shift, we flew our heavy weight spinnaker in what even I(known as Spinnaker Woman at home) would call 'testy' conditions!

Blog 20 - Windmills, Clogs, and Race Start

Well here we are in IJumuiden, Holland (about 40 minutes outside Amsterdam). This was a short stopover, and really only scheduled as a muster point for the fleet after Cork, and before we head to the grand finale in Hull. Our race into Ijmuiden was much faster than anticipated. Therefore the crews had [...]

Blog 11 - Wonderful Week in the Cape!

I arrived in the Cape a day early, and to the most exciting atmosphere I've seen in a long time! Cars lined both sides of the harbour honking and flashing lights as we steamed in! It was quite the spectacle! I was so proud and excited to be sailing home, family and friends awaiting the arrival on the cold dock! After docking and greeting family, we headed off for a hot meal, and a few drinks to celebrate!

From there the festivities continued! A week of jam-packed events and entertainment! We did so much; school and public tours of the boat, prize giving and a special ceremony with Membertou's Chief Terry Paul presented our skipper Jan Ridd with an eagle feather. That was amazing! There were on-going events and concerts every evening! It was hard to keep up!

My parents & I hosted a CBI crew party at the house, we had steak and planked salmon, everyone really enjoyed it! The crew is still talking about the food and what a great time they had despite the poor weather conditions we had that day! Of course that didn't slow too many down! It was great day!

The clipper family was invited for a day in the town of Louisburg, with music, lobster, and tours of the fortress! The list goes on! It was hard to see and do it all when I had so many family and friends I wanted to spend time with as well! It was a fast paced week, but I enjoyed every minute of it! I am looking forward to getting home and back on the lake the end of July! It's almost a little tease being there this past week, and then having to pack up and go again!

We, the crew of Cape Breton Island owe a huge thank you to ECBC, Lauri Taylor and her people, the Clipper committee, along with the volunteers who all pitched in and did so much for us. For all their hard work, Cape Breton is now on the minds of so many people from around the world!Everything went off without a hitch! And people are still talking about some of the events days after!
